Hullo...? by vantid

I love the theme of benevolent interactions between animals, so I made another hummingbird with cat drawing. I really like the almost Rembrandt lighting to this piece, a result of me trying to make a foresty background and not liking it. The best thing to do? Make it darker!

Medium: Ink Marker Colored Pencil Whiskey
Tags:
Ummm...? by vantid

My first ACEO (Artist Cards, Editions and Originals) that I completed. A Sappho Comet hummingbird has been attracted by the floral wreathe around this cat's neck, who is kinda "Ummm....ok!". This was fun to do, frustrating because I was experimenting, yet the fun outwieghed the ARGH. There are a lot of mistakes, I didn't use reference for the cat (unless Tigerlilly happened to be walking by) and only looked at a Sappho comet photo to make sure I got the color gradiations somewhat similar to the real thing. I learned from this!

I love hummingbirds, and Sappho Comets, or Red Tailed Comets as they are commonly referred to these days, are among my favorites. These are the birds Enya refers to in her song "China Roses." Hummers are so bold and confident, it's really a joy when they come down to say hi...where's my sugar water human! Hee. The thought of a friendly cat being visited by a hungry hummer was too cute an idea to pass up.

Medium: Colored pencils, marker, ink
Tags:
The Night Watch by vantid

"The Night Watch" depicts a winged white lion lit by the stars and the milky way. There are jewels worked into his mane and beautiful blue jewels set into his face to match his wise, knowing eyes. Stars bloom in the sky behind him. He watches you for a moment before he will ghost away in the starlight.

ACEO, Mostly Marker with some colored pencil and ink, blue interference paint that doesn't show up at all in the scan. and glitter pens.
These Woods Are Lovely... by vantid

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
~Robert Frost

An ACEO inspired by the last bit of that famous poem.

Medium: Colored Pencil over Marker, Paint, Ink
Tags:
Organic by vantid

Ravens are so amazingly cool and wonderful and beautiful and I sure didn't draw this one well. He holds a green glass orb swirling with its own life and symbolism. Ravens like shiny things so away he goes. Is he stealing the life as the hard cold technology rises around him? Will he transplant the life somewhere else? Is he punishing us humans and taking off and leaving us devoid of the only company we have on this planet: the other animals we share our world with? Or did the artist just want to draw something shiny? Your choice, you write the story in your own mind, keep it, share it, whatever you like. That's what art is for, making people who view it think and wonder and imagine. That IS inspiration and the most important thing in art for me.

Afternoon Visit by vantid

A winged tabby has dropped by to say hello to his koifriend (ahaha). The sun is throwing afternoon shadows through the garden in the background onto the white patio. Wonder what they're talking about... For you koi pond owners, you may think it's odd having a pool edge like that. My parents converted their swimming pool into a gigantic koi pond, so the edging depicted here is what I grew used to seeing. It really is quite beautiful and magical by a koi pond. :3

I was really trying with lighting here, buuuut...failed? It was supposed to be midday, but then I chose the wrong color for the patio and then BOOM it looked like afternoon. SIGH. Oh well!

Medium: Colored Pencil over Marker, paint
Tags:
Wayward Lights by vantid

The shifting unpredictable lights of a far away pole reveals, only for a moment, a phantom glimpse of a winged wolf, slightly windswept in the flat, barren landscape. The ever moving lights will change again, and, like ethereal brevity of the northern lights, this creature will disappear in a veil of darkness played upon light.

Medium: Ink and Marker
Tags:
Cosmic Pause by vantid

Many times, when drawing, the piece will take over and direct itself. This was just a profile of a wolf. Then, it became a piece of solitude. And last, it became an ethereal entity, a wolf god, taking a moment to think, wonder, or pause before moving on to bigger and better things than stardust. I didn't know that this would happen! It just did! Yet another wonderful thing about art. It's a chaos that seems like nothing until the final product emerges, and all the different facets of the evolution from the chaos can be seen. Or, at least, from the artist's view, and maybe to the viewer as well. It makes a piece seem more layered.

Speaking of layers, this was done in ink, marker, colored pencil, and some paint for accents on Mohawk paper and measures 3.5 by 2.5 inches

Medium: Colored Pencil over Marker, paint
Tags:
