I wish the contrast was a little better- it feels like there should be some really deep black in the shadows in places, but it never really gets past a dark grey, which unfortunately seems to give the whole thing an almost chalky look. Also loosing some of the great detail I know you put into it around the face and in the wings. you can probably bump it up a bit in photoshop, but it's a shame if you don't have a bigger scan of it.
Hope you don't mind that minor crit- it's a lovely little piece, and it feels like the contrast is -there- in the real piece, it just didn't scan right or something?

I love critiques. ;3
I can't remember how the original look, I know that the scanner I used on this mangles most of my art. I probably have the full sized scan around somewhere, unedited. Maybe I could tinker with that.
It's also possible that the real piece does lack contrast. :3

Well, I mentioned that I thought it had more to do with the scan because it reminds me a bit of what happens when you go into levels and bring it out of black too much with the slider at the bottom... Actually, I hope you don't mind, but I dragged it into PS and tweaked the levels just a bit to show you what I meant- it made the red much more intense, too, which can be avoided, I think, if you like it the less intense red but with the darker black. I don't think the intense red hurts it, but it does lose the nice subtle shift between a really warm red at the bottom to the cool purpley red near the top. Maybe a happy medium between the two could be found somehow?
Clicky! Top is the leveled version I tweaked, bottom is unedited for comparison.
